History & Audience Profile

Boston’s Caribbean American community celebrated its first Trinidad Style Carnival in 1973. It was founded by Ken Bonaparte Mitchell (1942 -2008). In the 40 years of its existence, it has grown from a couple of bands and limited support to over several dozen bands and attracts an estimated 300,000 visitors each year. They arrive from cities across North America, and the Caribbean.

Several Caribbean countries are represented in the parade such as Jamaica, Barbados, Antigua, Dominica, Haiti and Trinidad & Tobago. The African , Spanish and American High School parade bands participation have been growing in recent years.

There are other entertainment such as Steel band music, face painting, dance and Caribbean and American food on sale. Kiddies Carnival is probably the only event in Boston totally dedicated to the family during the month of August. This environment is ideally suited for companies needing access to the family such as Toys R Us, Car seat manufactures and business needing access to the family directly.

Queen of band

The King & Queen Show is held at the Reggie Lewis Center, Boston. It features the larger costumes which are part of each band’s presentation for the season. This is an opportunity for the audience to experience and see the costumes up close. Many in the audience wonder if the individuals parading the costumes can really maneuver them as easily as they do.  Entertainment is provided by Steel bands, local artists and an assortment of international Soca artists. Past entertainers have been The Shadow, Crazy and Shurwayne Winchester

jouvertJouvert begins very early (about 6:00AM) and participants wear costumes of their own design. It is typically dark in terms of presentation and very humorous. paradeThe Parade starts at 1:00 pm and moves along Blue Hill Avenue and culminates in front of Franklin Park Zoo for a distance 1.5 miles. The food court located in front of the Zoo, which features Caribbean and American cuisines and includes arts and crafts. several sponsor opportunities are available
