Pan United Steel Orchestra is proud to announce a new partnership with the Charlestown Community Center on 255 Medford Street, Charlestown. MA
5/24/2011, Boston, MA - Continuing our goal to aggressively promote the steel pan instrument and music education for inner-city youth, Pan United Steel Orchestra is proud to announce a new partnership with the Charlestown Community Center on 255 Medford Street in the Charlestown neighborhood in Boston Mass. We will base our steel orchestra at the Charlestown Community Center (CCC) for the 2011 carnival season and will provide programming for the CCC and its youths. This unprecedented move outside of the customary Dorchester – Roxbury – Mattapan area is central to one of our goals - promoting steel pan and Trinidadian culture on a broad audience. Full story
Steelpan University - the photography exhibition By Michael C. Smith
Steel Pan University is a photography exhibition featuring pannist from the Steel Pan/Band fraternity community around Boston. The idea for this exhibition came about when Michael spoke with several young pannist who were quite familiar with the instrument but were not very familiar with its history.
Photographer and Culture Warrior Michael Smith said this exhibition is his contribution to the on going Steel pan development across the world. The exhibition is designed to teach those not entirely sure about the roots and culture of the instrument to learn something about it evolution. As he said, it opens the door and can be used to further one’s knowledge of the instrument, arrangers, writers and composers.
Each piece will feature a pannist from the Steel pan fraternity community around Boston and imbedded in each piece is information about the history of the instrument. In addition all the pieces are presented in Black & White. (See Ellie 1 below)
Michael is a native of Trinidad and Tobago and has been following the local Trinidad culture around New England. A very avid photographer, his first exhibition entitled “Streets of Color” was launched in 2005 and received great reviews from the Carnival community in Boston.
Steel pan University is made up of about 30 pieces featuring pannist of all age groups from band based in New England. Most of the exhibition will have a question and answer component. Michael will speak on the history and development of the instrument. - if you are interested in participating please read the Sponsor letter
