Drums Not Guns / Stop The Violence:
Several organizations around Boston organize walks for several reasons and on Sunday 17, July 2011 the Caribbean American community joined the long list. This walk however, has a much more pressing purpose, a rush to stop the senseless violence taking place on the community. In recent month we have seen and know of someone whose life was taken due to gun violence.
Mr. Glen Noel, founder of Jah Jah Drummers recently celebrated their 15th anniversary, the theme “Drums not Guns” June 26. And on June 29th, a very dear friend of the organization and Glen was gunned down on the City Street. He and other victim’s families have taken on the task to truly begun to do what must be done for Strength and Peace in the community. Glen said “it is either you are part of the solution or the problem or it is better that we try and not try at all”.
The Walk was done in association with Dacia SHILLINGFORD-Compas President of International Support and Charity Association of Boston, Inc.
The walk started in Dudley Sq, Roxbury, MA and proceeds to Franklin Park where several speakers spoke about their desire to help in saving and stopping the violence in the community. Several speakers took part; Dr. Ulric Johnson, Nation of Islam Minister Rodney Mohammed and several others – please see our photo journalism piece above.
